Geology Research Guide

CSE Style Guide at HSU Library

Getting Started with CSE Style

This page provides a basic introduction to the CSE citation style. It is based on the 8th edition of the Scientific style and format: CSE manual published by the Council of Science Editors in 2014. The CSE manual is generally used for academic writing in the sciences. This guide provides basic explanations and examples for the most common types of citations used by students.

How to Format In-Text Citations

Author's Last Name, Publication Year

(McToad 2020)

Example in-text citations:

Research has shown that the demographic of the fly is a key determining factor in the robustness of its flavor (Frog 2018).

You could also place part of the citation in the text as follows:

As mentioned in Frog's seminal article (2018), the demographic of the fly is a key determining factor in the robustness of its flavor.

In this example, the author's name is mentioned in the text itself; therefore the name need not be repeated in the bracketed citation.
