Understanding LC Call Numbers

A call number is the address of a book or a periodical (magazine or journal) in the library. The Cal Poly Humboldt Library uses the Library of Congress call number system for arranging most of our materials. In our library

  • Books with call numbers that begin with A-N are shelved on the south side of the second floor (to the left off the main stairs).
  • Books with call numbers that begin with P-Z are shelved on the south side of the third floor (to the left off the main stairs).
  • Periodicals are shelved on the north side of the second floor (to the right off the main stairs).
  • Reference materials are integrated into the main stacks. Use the call number to locate the reference item.

Books and Library Catalogs

The Cal Poly Humboldt Library Catalog lists all of the books at our library. You can use the Cal Poly Humboldt Library Catalog to find videos and CDs in our library, too.  A keyword search is usually the best way to begin.  When you find items of interest, check the catalog records for subject headings or other terms to modify your search.

You can borrow books from other libraries with our interlibrary loan service. Use WorldCat or other catalogs to find books to borrow on interlibrary loan.  WorldCat and other catalogs are linked on the library homepage on the QuickSearch Catalogs tab.

You can use these catalogs to search for video and audio recordings, too.  Sometimes these formats can be borrowed on interlibrary loan.
