Searching for Books

Start with OneSearch on the Cal Poly Humboldt Library home page:

  • Use search terms to locate books on your topic
  • Use AND between multiple search terms to narrow your results
  • Under the Resource Type headeron the left side of your screen, select the books and/or book chapters filters to limit your results to only those types of sources
  • Additionally, you can select the full-text online filter under the Available at Humboldt header to limit your results to ebooks and ebook chapters

You will likely need to adjust your search terms as you learn more about your topic, so be open to trying new search terms. Below are some examples of potential search terms to get you started:

  • marijuana AND law
  • cannabis AND environment
  • medical marijuana AND health AND effects
  • cannabis AND California AND legalization
  • social justice AND (cannabis OR marijuana)

Search Term Considerations

There are many ways to describe cannabis informally. When searching for research/scholarly sources on cannabis, you will likely have the best results if you use one of the following terms:

  • cannabis
  • marijuana
  • weed
  • drugs

Note that using the term drugs in your search might include results related to cannabis, but it may include results that aren't directly tied to cannabis as well. Additionally, the following terms may generate limited or no results given that they are informal terms for cannabis and may not be the terms used by authors in their works:

  • chronic
  • devil's lettuce
  • herb
