On June 30, 2024, Amanda Dinscore and Eden Donahue presented a poster on this project at the American Libraries Association conference in San Diego, CA.
Description
National Library of Medicine (NLM) traveling exhibitions, offered on different topics each year, are freely available to libraries and can be leveraged to develop programming and outreach related to exhibit themes. This poster will share one university's efforts to extend the theme of a NLM exhibit entitled "Making a World of Difference: Stories About Global Health" to inspire participants to host their own exhibition and consider opportunities for creative programming.
At Cal Poly Humboldt University, the NLM exhibit presented an opportunity to extend the theme of global health into the nursing curriculum. This included a film competition where students planned, created, and shared their own public service announcement using NLM information sources.
A display highlighting local health advocacy in Humboldt, a rural county in northern California, was also created. Special focus was given to Betty Kwan Chinn, a local philanthropist and recipient of the 2010 Presidential Citizens Medal, and her efforts to improve the lives of local unhoused people. A small grant was used to purchase 400 copies of her biography, published by the library’s own press, that was distributed to nurses and community members, along with information about the exhibit and film competition.
The NLM exhibit provided a unique opportunity to develop a multifaceted project connecting the exhibit theme to the nursing curriculum and to the community where our nurses live and work. The project strengthened ties between the library and nursing program and encouraged students to see how local actions can make an impact on global health.
