This documentary podcast series from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Seeing White is a 14-part mini-series (30-45 min each) from the show Scene on Radio. The series looks to answer the questions:
Where did the notion of “whiteness” come from? What does it mean? What is whiteness for?
Hosts Jon Biewen and weekly guest host Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika delve into the historical origins of whiteness and racism in the US. The series looks at the history as well as the social constructs and emotional grappling that Americans engage in when discussing race and whiteness. Join us each week to discuss a new topic.
This podcast circle (think book circle but with podcasts) is currently not meeting but we will be soon! Please let me know if you are interested or if you have requests or questions - tim.miller@humboldt.edu.
Generally speaking, the group will meet weekly to examine the entire series, usually covering two episodes per meeting. See the past schedule below to get a sense of dates and readings.
While we welcome you to attend all of the sessions, you may listen on your own and/or attend any days that you are able.
Please come to the scheduled sessions prepared to discuss the episode. You can listen to the episodes or read the transcripts.
Please note: the podcast circle is not currently meeting. These are the materials and schedule if you are curious about the pace and/or want to host your own. The discussion prompts for each section are Google Docs for you to print or make a copy of to suit your group's needs. If you are interested in participating and/or want to learn more about facilitating your own group, contact me: tim.miller@humboldt.edu.
