About the Collection

Welcome to the Children's Literature Collection (CLC) guide! The CLC at Cal Poly Humboldt contains fiction and nonfiction children's and young adult literature. This collection is located on the 2nd floor of the University Library, north wing.

The purpose of the CLC is to support the educational needs of students as well as students' families and community members. It is not comprehensive, but includes representations of various types of children’s literature, including fiction and non-fiction, young adult titles, and graphic novels. Collection priorities include content created by and representative of marginalized and underrepresented groups as well as Newbery, Caldecott, and other award winners. Books that have been banned or challenged elsewhere will also be prioritized. Some resources in the collection may contain views, opinions, and concepts that were popular or widely held at one time but are now considered outdated, offensive, or harmful. Materials will not be excluded from the collection for these reasons. More here.

Selecting & Evaluating Texts

A Tool for Selecting Diverse Texts
A checklist developed by Teaching Tolerance to help you evaluate a text.

Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors
A powerful framework to consider when evaluating a text is described in Rudine Sims Bishop’s essay, Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors. Books are mirrors when readers see their own lives reflected in the pages. Books are windows when they allow readers a view of lives and stories that are different from their own. Books become sliding glass doors when readers feel transported into the world of the story and when they feel empathy for the characters.
