Using Call Numbers and Finding Books

What is a Call Number?

A call number is basically the "address" of where you will find a book in the library. Books in the HSU Library are arranged according to the Library of Congress classification system.

You can see the call number of a book whenever you search the HSU Library Catalog.

1) Let's say we're looking for a book called Cinematic Footprint : Lights, Camera, Natural Resources by Nadia Bozak. We can type in Cinematic Footprint in the HSU Library Catalog Search. Next, we click on the Search button:

HSU Catalog Search

2)You will then see the list of items in the HSU Library with that phrase

Catalog Results

3) After you select Electronic or paper physical you will see the catalog record for this book. Notice that the call number is displayed for you in the record:

4) Now that we have our call number, let's take a look at what the number means. Click on the tab Reading Call Numbers.
