The State of California has a new, powerful research tool for  California Legislative Information.  You can search laws, regulations and more.  It gets a little complicated so a good place to start is the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the site.

Public Policy Institute of California

Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank. They publish reports in various topic areas.  Check out the Health and Human Services offerings.

The Legislative Analysts Office has a good selection of Health and Human Services reports.

The California State Library has a good collection of California Research Bureau Reports.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services 

This is the  homepage for the federal department that oversees social and human services programs.  There are a lot of agencies and information under this huge site.  See their A to Z index.

2016 Green Book

This resource from the House Ways and Means Committee provides descriptions and historical information on major social and economic programs, e.g., TANF, Medicare, Social Security, etc

The University of North Texas has a good archive of Congressional Research Service Reports in full text.  Browse them by subject by scrolling down the start page a bit or make sure your search says "Search Inside the Congressional Research Service Reports", because there is a lot of other content in this system.


govinfo provides free online access to official Federal Government publication.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States- A federal publication listing statistics for particular years in different areas such as social welfare, poverty, veterans affairs, deaths, maternity, etc.
